Backups and restore

Twice a day, kept permanently, mirrored off the server.

What is backed up

A consistent snapshot of the database and an archive of the whole vault, at 06:00 and 18:00 South African time. Backups are kept permanently on the practice server; nothing is pruned.

Off-server copy

A second machine on the practice network can pull every backup file it does not yet have, once a day, over the private network. Nothing is ever deleted on either side.

Restore

Stop the service, put the chosen database snapshot in place, extract the vault archive, start the service. The search index rebuilds on start-up. A restore of a practice-sized installation takes seconds. Test it quarterly and record the result.
